John Hoagland, long time Poser artist and content creator, told us how he got started in 3D, and how his interest in Poser led to the creation of his 3D production company, Vanishing Point:

I first started using Poser in mid 2000. I had always been interested in computer graphics, but I could never draw people. They always came out as blobby stick figures! As soon as I started using Poser, I immediately found that it was a great tool for making images with people. At first, I only used Poser to play around with 3D models and sets. In fact, some of my earlier images were simply pre-existing comic-book characters and poses.

Less than a year later, I started learning how to make my own models, first with Ray Dream Studio, then with Lightwave. After that, I started giving away models by offering them in the free stuff section of Poser community websites. Not long after that, I started selling models. And in 2004, I created my own business, called Vanishing Point, to specifically create products (both for free and for sale) to the Poser community. Around the time that Poser 6 was released we became a Content Paradise partner, and we have continued to expand our Poser content for the last couple of years.

Today, Vanishing Point is a multi-national 3D production company, specializing in building, texturing and rigging models, animation, video and film production, corporate design and graphics. As well as being one of the leading content providers for Poser, Vue, 3D Studio Max, Lightwave, and Cinema4D, we also provide a custom modeling service, and can produce short animations to client specifications.

For me, Poser is more than just a character posing program. It's a way to be creative by making artwork, sharing things that I've created, and even a way to make money. The most useful feature in Poser is its ability to quickly pose characters and other figures. It's easy enough to build a cityscape in a 3D program, but just try to build your own human figure... and then add clothes... and pose it... and give it an expression. Using Poser makes this part of the process very easy!

As I've used Poser over the years, I haven't purchased much content (except for some base figures). For the most part, if I need a vehicle or building for an image, I can usually build it myself. As for my favorite add-on content... am I allowed to mention my own Train Set? Seriously, though, I think the Dinosaur models (made by e frontier) are excellent. They pose very well and have excellent textures.
